How to Measure a PDF Online (mm, cm, inches) in 3 Steps
You have a PDF and you need to know how big something on it really is: a logo, a margin, a label, a whole page. Printing it just to hold a ruler against the paper wastes ink and time. You can measure a PDF online instead, in the unit you need, without installing anything.
Why measuring a PDF on screen is tricky
A PDF describes a page in physical terms, but your screen shows it in pixels. Zoom in and a 10 mm square looks bigger; zoom out and it looks smaller. A normal PDF viewer's on-screen size says nothing reliable about real-world size.
A proper PDF ruler fixes this by doing all the math in PDF points (1/72 inch) and converting to your chosen unit. That is how PdfRuler works, so a page at 50%, 100% or 400% zoom reports the same physical dimensions.
How to measure a PDF online in 3 steps
- Open your PDF. Go to PdfRuler and drag and drop the file, or click Open PDF. The file is rendered in your browser and is never uploaded.
- Pick your unit. Choose millimetres, centimetres, inches, points or pixels from the unit menu. The rulers around the page update instantly.
- Read the measurement. Move your cursor over the page. The status bar shows the exact X and Y position in your unit, and the page width and height are shown next to it. Subtract two positions to get the distance between any two points.
Measuring the distance between two points
Hover over the first edge and note the X value, then hover over the second edge and note its X value. The difference is the width. Do the same with Y for height. Turn on the grid overlay if you want gridlines at major tick spacing to line things up by eye, and enable rulers on all four sides to read values from whichever edge is closest.
Which unit should you use?
- Millimetres / centimetres: print jobs, labels, packaging and most of the world outside the US.
- Inches: US Letter and Legal documents, photo prints, US print shops.
- Points: the native PDF unit, used by design software and developers. See what a PDF point is.
- Pixels: screen design work, at 96 pixels per inch.
Is it accurate?
Measurements come straight from the PDF's own coordinates, not from how big the page looks on your monitor. Accuracy is limited by how precisely you can place your cursor, which improves as you zoom in. For the page itself, the size is exact.
Is it private?
Yes. PdfRuler runs entirely in your browser. Your PDF never leaves your device, which matters for contracts, drawings and anything confidential.
Frequently asked questions
Can I measure a PDF without Adobe Acrobat?
Yes. A browser-based PDF ruler like PdfRuler lets you measure any PDF in mm, cm, inches, points or pixels without installing Acrobat.
Does zooming change the measurement?
No. Measurements are calculated in PDF points and converted to your chosen unit, so any zoom level reports identical physical dimensions.
Is my PDF uploaded anywhere?
No. Everything runs client-side in your browser; the file never leaves your device.
