How to Measure Every Box in a PDF Automatically

October 1, 2026 · 3 min read

Checking a layout box by box is slow: click a corner, click the opposite corner, repeat for every frame, label and image. PdfRuler can do it for you. One click on Auto measures every rectangular box on the page.

How to measure all boxes at once

  1. Open your PDF and choose your unit (mm, cm, inches, points or pixels).
  2. Click the Auto icon (an arcade joystick with a green ball handle) in the toolbar, next to the eraser, or press A.
  3. Every box on the page gets its width and height drawn and labelled, and every straight line gets its length. A note tells you how many boxes and lines were measured.
  4. Click it again to clear the automatic measurements and measure the page again. Points you placed yourself stay.

What counts as a box

The page background, hairlines and tiny specks are skipped, and on very busy pages the largest 80 boxes and 40 lines are measured.

Measures what you can actually see

Print files often draw a background that runs past its frame (the bleed) and is cut off by a clipping box. PdfRuler follows those clips, so a box is measured as the visible part. A card whose artwork bleeds out to 65.8 x 94.8 mm but is clipped to the card at 61 x 91 mm is reported as 61 x 91 mm.

Exact, not estimated

PdfRuler reads the rectangles from the PDF's own drawing instructions, so the sizes are the real vector dimensions, not guessed from pixels. They stay exact at any zoom, and they work with a rotated page and with any origin corner.

Edit and save the result

Each box is made of ordinary points and lines, so you can drag, delete or add to them like any other measurement. Save the PDF and the measurements are drawn into the copy.

Frequently asked questions

How do I measure all the rectangles in a PDF at once?

Click the Auto icon in the PdfRuler toolbar. Every rectangle and image on the current page gets its width and height measured and labelled in your chosen unit.

Are the automatic measurements exact?

Yes. They come from the PDF's vector drawing instructions, so they are the true sizes, not pixel estimates, and they do not change when you zoom.

How do I redo or remove the automatic measurements?

Click the Auto icon again. The previous automatic points and lines are cleared and the page is measured again; points you placed yourself stay. The eraser removes everything.

Does Auto-measure find text or curved shapes?

No. It measures rectangular boxes (filled or outlined rectangles and placed images) and straight lines. Text, circles and other curves are skipped.
