Seven tools beyond the ruler.

Measure one shape, write on the page, point at a detail, zoom in without zooming, take a step back, juggle five PDFs, or put two side by side. Every card below is live, so poke it.

Pick: measure one box or line with one click

Hover any box or straight line and PdfRuler outlines it. Click, and you get its exact vector size, with no points to place. It reads the PDF's own drawing instructions, so a 85 x 55 mm card says 85 x 55 mm.

Hover a box, then click it.Read the guide →
T

Text: type a note anywhere on the PDF

Click the page and type. Choose a font, size and color, drag the note into place, and save a copy with the text written into the page. Handy for approvals, corrections and labels on a proof.

Arrow: point at the problem

Drag on the page to draw an arrow from tail to head. Hold Shift for dead-level or 45-degree arrows. Arrows are saved as sharp vector lines, so they stay crisp at any print size.

Magnifier loupe: aim at 4x, no zooming

A round lens follows your cursor and shows the page four times larger, centred where a click would land. Place points on tiny corners without zooming the whole page in and out.

Z

Undo, redo and history: jump to any step

Every point, line, guide, text and arrow is a step you can take back. Press Ctrl + Z to undo, Ctrl + Shift + Z to redo, or open the history list and jump straight to any step, each with its coordinates and lengths. It lives in memory only, so nothing is stored.

Click a step to jump to it.Read the guide →

Tabs: five PDFs, each with its own work

Open up to five PDFs at once. Each tab keeps its own page, zoom, points, guides and undo history, so you can check a whole print job in one window without losing your place.

Click the page, switch tabs, add one.Read the guide →

Split view: compare two PDFs side by side

Show a proof and its revision next to each other. Each pane has its own rulers, zoom and measurements, and whichever you click takes the toolbar. Drag the divider to give one side more room.

FAQ

Quick answers.

What is a PDF ruler?

A PDF ruler puts real-world rulers (mm, cm, inches, points) around a PDF page so you can read exact sizes and positions. PdfRuler is a PDF ruler online: open a file in your browser, nothing to install.

Is there a free PDF ruler online?

Yes. PdfRuler at pdfruler.com is a free online PDF ruler. No account, and your PDF never leaves your device.

Can I open two PDFs side by side?

Yes. Press V or click the split icon to show two PDFs next to each other. Each pane has its own rulers, zoom, measurements and tabs, so you can compare a proof with its revision.

Can I open several PDFs at once?

Yes, up to five, in tabs. Each tab keeps its own page, zoom, points, guides and undo history. Every file stays in your browser.

Is PdfRuler free and private?

Yes. It is free, and everything runs in your browser. Your PDF is never uploaded to a server.

Are measurements accurate at any zoom?

Yes. Everything is calculated in PDF points (1/72 inch) and converted only for display, so 50%, 100% or 400% report the same physical size.

Which units are supported?

Millimetres, centimetres, inches, points and pixels.

How do I find the page size of a PDF?

Open it in PdfRuler. The page width and height show in the status bar in your chosen unit. A4 reads 210 x 297 mm.

Does it change my original file?

No. Saving downloads a separate copy with your points, lines and guides drawn on it as vectors.

Can I undo a measurement or see what I changed?

Yes. Ctrl + Z undoes any change to points, lines and guides, Ctrl + Shift + Z (or Ctrl + Y) redoes it, and the History button next to them in the status bar lists every step so you can jump back to any of them. It is kept in memory only: nothing is stored or uploaded, and it clears when you change page or open another PDF.
